In the 1930s, Elizabeth Craig wrote 250 recipes for Borwick's. Here are six to start with — two of them straight from our own historic advertisements.

Victoria Sponge

50 minutes · One 20cm sandwich cake

The definitive British sponge — golden, level and impossibly light. A teaspoon of Borwick's alongside self-raising flour is the classic insurance policy.

Buttermilk Scones

Tall, craggy scones with a proper rise. Baking powder made the scone what it is — before 1842, this teatime staple simply couldn't exist.

A wartime favourite, boiled in a cloth the old way. This is Borwick's own recipe, printed in a magazine advertisement in 1940.
